How to handle big changes...

Navigating them with positivity and hope

“I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself.” - Maya Angelou

Samford Hall, Auburn University

Ah, life. It’s always on the move, keeping us on our toes, catching us off guard when we least expect it, never, ever stopping. I’ve taken the last couple of weeks off from writing to, well, not. To stop and catch my breath. Transitions are happening all around and I’m all the things - excited, curious, hopeful, sleepless at times with anticipation. Life has crept up on me a bit and I want to take it all in. So today I’m sharing how to handle changes, big or small, with positivity and hope.

For starters, transitions aren’t always bad. Some are expected (like going off to college), and others are not. They’re where we make our memories, where our characters are challenged, where we rise to the occasion. Personally I think that’s good for us, though not always easy. Often events happen for us, not to us, and how we look at our circumstances predicts the outcome, as always.

Secondly, home feels more significant than ever. When changes are happening all around us, home is where we find our bearings. I love the above quote by Maya Angelou because it rings true. No matter where we are, we want to feel at home. Taking the time to create a home that offers us a place of beauty, respite, and peace is vital to our everyday well-being, and it’s the primary reason I design and write about homes.

According to Psychology Today, change is neurologically good for us, allowing us to “grow new neural pathways”. Sounds good! Getting stuck in our ways is definitely not stimulating, and changes big or small can make us feel like a new person.

Go with the good. If I had to say I had a mantra, this would be it. I honestly believe there is good to be found in (almost) any situation. Change might revive your faith, force you to meet new people, or meet a challenge head on and realize you’re stronger than you realized. We can’t stop change from happening but we can adjust how we face it.

As we get ready to empty our nest in a couple of months, help family members with moves, ramp up our work life and take the time to enjoy summer, I’m aiming to settle into a new routine of accepting change in the everyday. I hope you do too.

Thank you for reading and Happy Memorial Day weekend! I’ll see you here next time…
