Last 10% ~ Hardware

Finding Delight in a Drawer Pull...

Hardware is one of those things that can be a last-minute addition or even an afterthought in the design of a space, but it shouldn’t be. Often described as the jewelry of a room, the hardware is like a fabulous pair of earrings, which can make or break any outfit and serves as the perfect finishing touch. The right style and type of hardware lends itself to the overall design of a room and can bring a cohesive look together - the final voila! that seals the deal and sends you into what I like to call “homebliss”. Yes, it has to be functional (and the screws have to be the right size for the door or cabinet) but the style is where the hardware really shines.

Here are some of my favorite sources for this essential finishing touch:

Hoffman Hardware

One of the most innovative and stylish brands on the market today, Hoffman Hardware is unique, creative, and chic. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Krista Hoffman at the Design Social Pop-Up, seeing her hardware up close, and hearing the story of how she created her company. This interior designer began making perforated brass pulls in 2017 for the San Francisco Decorator Showhouse and hasn’t looked back. Her handmade pieces, made in the U.S.A. by metal artisans, focus on proportion and specific materials and are influenced by both art and architecture. Each handcrafted piece is like a mini work of art and a statement in its own right, and used together create a striking finishing touch to a well-designed room.

Modern Matter

A popular choice among today’s designers, Modern Matter has a wide variety of beautiful, well-made pulls, knobs, hooks, latches (and more). You can shop by type, room, or material, and they’ve collaborated with designers including Sarah Bartholomew and Mark D. Sikes. Coming soon? A collaboration with Newport Beach’s design house Pure Salt. Different hardware can really be used anywhere as long as it’s an integral part of the overall design, but I love that you can shop by room (Mudroom, for example) if you don’t know where to start.

Nest Studio

Founded in 2012, Nest Studio hardware is a key player in the world of luxury hardware. With statement-making shapes, materials, and applications, Nest offers an array of appealing designs in various shapes and sizes to suit any schematic. You can order directly from their website and shop by collection, finish, or type, and they list in-stock quick ship items too. Their Lauhala collaboration with Hawaii-based brand Ku & Moe is particularly intriguing and would enhance an office or library with its mix of materials. A wonderful place to browse for design inspiration, Nest Studio is one of the trade secrets of many renowned interior designers.

Rejuvenation

This home company, originally out of Portland, Oregon, was one of the first sources I started using for my projects. Now owned by Williams-Sonoma, Rejuvenation offers everything from lighting to furniture to rugs, but their hardware has always been a go-to for classic, beautiful, well-made pulls and knobs, door hardware, house numbers, and hooks at an attractive price point. Their online lookbooks, measuring tools and finish guides steer you to where you need to be to find just the right style for your home and even how to install it properly. Known for their lighting as well, they offer mirrors, baskets, shelving, and an extensive outdoor collection. (Side note ~ I bought their organic cotton bath towels when we moved and they are house favorites!)

Rocky Mountain Hardware

An industry leader in handcrafted hardware for over 30 years, Rocky Mountain Hardware is the place to go if you’re looking for beautifully made products for your primary home, cabin, lake retreat, or favorite getaway. Handmade from mold to finish in premium bronze, their hardware is designed to make a subtle but opulent statement and crafted to last a lifetime. The company also focuses on sustainability and has been “implementing green practices long before it became a trend”. Their pieces can’t be purchased directly from the website, but they have a Design Your Own tool where you can create custom products and you can easily find a dealer nearby to view their exquisite wares in person. They also have a guide with step-by-step instructions on how to order. You absolutely can’t go wrong with anything made from this family-owned company based in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Lovely hardware can take your home from “so-so” to stunning with just a few thoughtfully selected pieces. There are a wealth of options out there, but these sources are my favorites for their quality, elegance, and gorgeousness! There are so many different styles, and the hardware you invest in will obviously depend on your home and the look you’re going for, so take the time to really research the products. If you’re unsure about the type or style you need, I’d suggest ordering a few samples to try before you commit to a look (just be sure to check the return policy). I hope this was helpful and gives you some idea of where the pros go to find hardware for their projects (and discerning clients). Remember ~ an investment in beautiful hardware will not only give you the perfect finishing touch to your room, but will be something you enjoy for many years to come.

homebliss ~ a peaceful state of contentment that comes with living in a well-designed home.
