Plus some storage options to pretty things up...
Is it still January? Somehow it seems like it’s been a long month so far. January can bring so many different emotions – relief that a new year is (finally) here, anticipation of new beginnings and a fresh start, a chance for a do-over in whatever area of life needs one. It can also be a time of complete overwhelm, with resolutions on the mind (or already forgotten), plans for the coming year, goals to set, the list goes on. After the holidays I love taking time to recover at my own pace, be grateful for the new numbers on the calendar, and ease into things if possible. No major resolutions, no pressure, no dry January for me; just some time to set my sights on 2024 and what’s on the horizon.
What’s going on in your life this year? Is there a big change ahead? Are you settled? Anxious? Scared? Excited? For me, the year is fraught with both possibilities and big changes – our daughter will be heading off to college soon and we’ll be empty nesters. Hard to believe. My husband’s new career takes a lot of work, and I’ll be helping more with his endeavors. I have an interior design project in L.A. that I love. My real estate writing is slowing down (I see you, AI), which may indicate the end of that season of my life. I don’t know, but there are a lot of changes to come for sure.
When the overwhelm wakes me at 4am or I feel slightly out of control, I take time to think. I try to clear out my head and yes – my home as well. Since our home is the place that gives me the freedom to relax and let go, I absolutely love cleaning it out and simplifying. It’s very “January” of me, I know, but it feels so good – like getting a great haircut or losing a few pounds. Whether you’re a KonMari devotee or a fan of Holly Blakey at Breathing Room, there are so many ways to get inspired to clean out your home (or closet, or even just your pantry). If you’re looking for storage solutions or need something new to make the project more fun (!), I like options from Society Social, Serena & Lily (love this double hamper), Rejuvenation (the leather baskets) the Shoppe at Amber Interiors (love this one), and Jenni Kayne Home (here and pictured below). I’m urging you to just begin. Anywhere. For me this month it’s been my closet - I couldn’t believe how much stuff was just taking up space. Donating the excess has felt so good and helped me to clear my head and make more room in our rather small closets. Cleaning out is nothing new, but it’s a great reminder to tackle what’s in front of you and make space – literally and figuratively – to take some time for yourself and get ready for 2024. A clean space brings peace, balance, and tranquility, which is my favorite way to start the new year. Hope yours is off to a great start, whatever lies ahead.
Thank you for reading. Enjoy your weekend and I’ll see you here next time.
