Where to Find Art for Your Home
Ah, the unfinished space. You know the one. It’s that blank wall you keep meaning to fill with a great painting or favorite photos or that empty bookshelf that is driving you crazy. One of the biggest challenges I’ve seen people struggle with is an unfinished space, what I like to call the last 10%. What’s needed is the right finishing touch - whether it’s art, a gorgeous pair of lamps, the perfect rug (in the right size), beautiful frames housing cherished family photos. My new series, The Last 10%, is a feature dedicated to finding that perfect piece - the cherry on top of a well-designed room, one that creates a space that feels inviting and collected, curated and complete. Today, we’ll start with art!
Where to Find Art for Your Home
I love art - it’s completely subjective. I think people are intimidated by the process of buying art; they wait until they happen to be gallery-hopping with their plus-one in a dreamy destination or until they receive a treasured painting handed down by a family member to hang something on their walls. The best way to find art you like is to search for anything that draws you in and makes you feel good. You don’t have to wait for the perfect piece to come along to fill your mantel or walls. There are a lot of fun options, from Etsy to Chairish to your local consignment shop or flea market, to find art that speaks to you and brings you joy every time you walk by, even as a place holder. Here are a few select sources that consistently offer beautiful pieces for my projects and cater to different styles and tastes:
Urban Garden Prints ~ One of my favorite resources for a quick fix to your blank space, find a comfy spot on the sofa and settle in to peruse their inventory. Fun and colorful prints, original paintings, photographs, and even artwork for your Frame TV can be found on this delightful website, and many can be customized. Started by two sisters who pride themselves on their Southern heritage, Urban Garden Prints has become a mainstay in the world of interior designers and stylists. Take your time - you will surely find something perfect for your space (check out their selection of mirrors as well) at a welcome price point.
Natural Curiosities ~ Based in Los Angeles, this purveyor of different media forms has been a go-to for decor enthusiasts and designers for decades: striking photography, vintage art, French textiles, architectural drawings, maps, the list goes on. Shop by style (traditional, contemporary, minimalist), mood (mid-century, farmhouse, coastal, etc.), color, or subject to find something fun and unexpected. A treasure trove of selections for your home, beach house, cabin, first apartment, or project.
Chairish ~ You don’t have to be a designer to shop like one and Chairish is a reflection of that very notion. This is one of the first places I peruse when on the hunt for special artwork or other investment pieces; their selection is unparalleled and curated for a designer’s eye. An essential online shop for sourcing vintage and contemporary art, including paintings, prints, sculptures, photography, and drawings, Chairish is a perennial favorite.
Etsy ~ There are so many ways to buy art on Etsy. To begin, my suggestion would be to type in the style of art that you’re searching for (oil painting, vintage surf art, etc.). Browse different artists, read reviews, and get creative! I’ve often found artwork on Etsy that I’ve also seen in other places for a much higher price. If you’re looking for a little diamond in the rough to round out your gallery wall or place on a mantel or bookshelf, you might just find it here.
Shop Local ~ It’s always a good idea to support your local retail and consignment shops - they often carry treasures you could absolutely find no where else. It’s also helpful to see pieces in person and how they’d fit in your space. Let the owner know what you’re looking for (bring pics!) and they can help you choose something or keep an eye out as they receive new inventory. We have several favorite retailers here in Newport Beach, including Juxtaposition, Pure Salt, and Barclay Butera, all of whom have select art that changes regularly. Our consignment shops offer a wide variety of interesting art as well, notably Magnolia Mews, The Find, and Lido Consignment, while Seaside Gallery and Goods represents local artists and their work.
Art is one of the best elements to create a home you love, and I hope you found this helpful and inspiring. Enjoy your weekend and I’ll see you here next time!
